How many poor does India still have?
Recently Indian Treasury Department declared a plan of cutting down poor population, it is reported that the government will invest several billion on the area of employment, medical treatment, basic construction and education. There are hundreds million poor population in India, it is no doubt that the government has the responsibility to help them out, what on controversy is that how many poor people India has, according to the assess of Planning Committee, there are still 27.5% people under the poor, the standard is based on the per capita daily calorie intake, one month income of a family can afford 2400 calorie food for a farmer, while for city residence, it can provide 2100 calorie food.
A large amount of people takes the challenge of poor line standard ever before, the new dissatisfied comment is from the words from a directed commissioner of national supreme court last week, it points out that the amount of poor people in India has reached at least 50% of the whole population, because the standard of poor line which is created by National Planning Committee is not right at all, the factor of food price should not be considered in.
The standard of poor line needs not only the consideration from technical. A high poor line means that the local government would get more money from central government because of diverse anti-poor plan. Even the National Prime Minister also realizes that the great pressure from finance, and the government finance problem is much serious right now.
No matter whether people can get the calorie what they need, the national every other five years’ investigation data shows that real consume of each Indian is not 2400 or 2100, the nowadays level for many of them is lower than ten years ago. 25% of the poorest Indian people consumes 1624 calorie every day. Plus, the most consume of them is from corn, the food of rich man includes meat, vegetable, fruit and other high nutritional food. Maybe the most painful thing is that 20% of the poor population can not be confirmed in the poor group, and they can not get the national welfare support, while the 17% rich people owns the qualification.
It looks like the research on Indian poor gets more problems but answers. When the Indian government spends several billion dallors on the battle with poverty, maybe they should also spend hundreds million on the following items: collect better data, make sure who is the poor, what they eat, whether they get the local government support or not. This may be a better way to help government cut down the cost of welfare, it is more efficiency to reduce the in-nutritional population and help them out of poverty.
